Treatment options for Zoophobia
Modelling refers to the way in which a therapist first carries out a procedure himself while the patient watches, that is he 'models' the process in order to demonstrate how it can be achieved. The therapist then helps the patient to carry out the procedure himself. In the case of spider phobia, modelling usually involves some form of indirect or direct contact with a spider.
Gradually increased or graded exposure refers to a series of stages in which contact with a spider is intensified in a carefully planned, controlled way. The patient must be able to comfortably complete one stage (usually several times), with a reduced level of anxiety before progressing to further, more intensive degrees of exposure. Some therapists have refined the technique to such an extent that they are able to offer treatment in one session lasting up to three hours.
However, those who practise this method emphasise that it should be regarded as a starting point for ongoing self-help measures. Often, the treatment session is recorded on video tape and playing the video can form part of the self-help programme as the person is able to remind himself at any time of just how much he has achieved. Thereafter, the most important aspect of self-help is to no longer avoid spiders or the places where they may occur and to become the member of the family who is always asked to put them out of the house.
