Germ Phobia - Fear from Germs
TweetWhat is Germ Phobia?
Germ phobia is a kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Experts don't know for sure what causes OCD. It may be a chemical imbalance, which can be helped with certain medicines; it could be a brain communication issue. Germ phobia may be mild or severe, and may last for decades.
Talk to a health care professional if you feel that your germ concerns are irrational, or are taking over too much of your life.
Germ Phobics Symptoms and reactions
Germ phobics worry about things that aren't really dangerous in terms of germs they carry. They look for minutest details for the germs. Hotel sheets and towels, for example, or airline pillows and blankets.
One of the most well known germ phobics was Howard Hughes, who became so obsessed with germs that he could not bathe, not eat most foods, or not drink most beverages, germs being literally everywhere he touched, and eventually, he became entirely confined to a single room on his hotel floor.
Types and varieties of Germ Phobia
Germ phobia ranges from relatively mild - where one might simply be afraid to use public toilets, without some type of barrier or it can be so severe as to be completely devastating for daily chores, in which individuals with germ phobia cannot leave their homes, and may themselves actually live in filth, because they cannot touch anything for fear of catching germs.
