The aetiology or development of phobias is a complex subject and one in which there is considerable disagreement among experts, with some favouring one model over another. Others believe that no single model can account for all phobias and that there are several different, underlying, developmental mechanisms at work. Grouping phobias according to their aetiology might, in fact, produce a quite different set of categories to those that are currently in use.
