The area of research involves evaluating the mechanisms that may be at work in maintaining phobias, once they are in place. One critical factor that psychologists have had to address is the reason why some fears are so much more common than others.
Although it is known that almost any stimulus can provoke a phobic response, some are evidently far more likely to do so, and this phenomenon is known as the 'non-random distribution of phobic fears'.
