What is Zemmiphobia?

Zemmiphobia - Fear of the great mole rat.

Treatment of Zemmiphobia

The initial stage (which may be the first contact between therapist and patient), is an interview lasting for about one hour in which the exact nature of the individual's phobic beliefs and behaviours are ascertained.

This may be called the 'behavioural analysis interview' and through it the therapist gains valuable insights that enable him to 'tailor' his pre-therapy information and instructions, and the treatment itself, in a manner appropriate to the individual.

Depending upon the amount of time available, there may be a discussion in which the patient's distorted beliefs about spiders and his own abilities to cope begin to be challenged, with the aims of treatment being introduced. It is very important that therapist and patient build up a relationship that enables them to work as a team if treatment is to be successful, so this discussion has to be handled in a careful and expert manner.

The next stage is a 'pre-treatment discussion' in which these factors are more fully explored and the patient is informed about what will take place during treatment itself.
