Fear, and the heightened state of physiological arousal and alertness that accompanies it, is present not only in human beings but in many animal species as well, and so it is easy to accept that its existence confers an adaptive advantage. Also, the physiological or biological processes that can be involved in fear, such as the release of the hormone adrenaline to prepare the body for' fright, flight or fight', are undoubtedly under genetic control.
