In general, aetiological models of phobias fall into three broad categories, the first of which are those that are thought to operate mainly at the unconscious level, while the second are those that fall within reach of conscious thought. However, it is now accepted by many experts that there is probably a considerable degree of overlap between the two, and this provides the third category.
