Dog Phobia
TweetWhat is Dog Phobia?
Dog phobia is one of a range of relatively common animal phobias which is usually acquired in childhood before the age of ten years. A slight fear of dogs is not uncommon in young children and is understandable in that large, boisterous dogs, even those that are friendly, must seem physically overwhelming to someone small. However, most children lose their nervousness as they grow older and gain more experience of dogs.
Symptoms of dog phobia
As in other animal phobias, phobics experience extreme and irrational fear in relation to dogs. This is an obvious disadvantage in everyday life since these animals are commonly encountered in almost every country of the world.
It is probable that most people in the British Isles could expect to encounter a dog at some stage upon leaving their own home and garden, if not every day, then at least fairly frequently. Hence it is easy to appreciate that dog phobia can cause considerable distress.
As in other animal phobias, the condition tends to be long-lasting and pers.istent but is amenable to treatment in most cases.
