Breathing is also central to effective meditation. Breathing well is an excellent way of focusing the mind and blocking out the surface' chatter' of the mind. In order to achieve this, sit in your chosen position and relax your entire body.
Once your eyes are closed, relax and focus on the rhythm of your breathing. It will probably be shallower and slower than usual at first. Slowly deepen your intake of air and watch your stomach rise and fall with each breath. Count each one, saying to yourself' in' with each inhalation and 'out' with each exhalation. Don't try to push the pace; let it emerge naturally. Slowly you will find yourself focusing entirely on your own breathing. In time this should help to banish other thoughts from your mind.
