Suffering from Arachnephobia?
TweetWhat is Arachnephobia?
Arachnephobia or Arachnophobia- Fear of spiders.
Spider phobia is one of the most common types of animal phobia and usually arises in childhood before the age of ten years. Although it has been intensively studied and many theories about the underlying mechanisms have been put forward, few undisputed facts have emerged. However, two factors concerning the physical characteristics of spiders seem to be relevant and these are the way the animal moves, especially the unpredictability of its movement, and its appearance.
Development of Arachnephobia
The development and acquisition of phobias is worth commenting on the role of adverse experiences in spider phobia, sometimes called conditioning. An adverse experience can be briefly described as some kind of direct, one-off first encounter with the animal (stimulus) in which the person became very frightened. In animal phobias, these experiences usually take place in childhood. A number of surveys of spider phobics have been carried out and, while numbers vary, only some of those surveyed are able to remember a particularly bad experience with a spider. A smaller number report vicarious conditioning (observing parents, family or friends being fearful of spiders ). Quite frequently, no conditioning experience can be brought to mind and the person states that he has had the phobia for as long as he can remember.
