How to Get Rid of Wernicke's Encephalopathy

 

The alternative names of the wernicke's encephalopathy are korsakoff psychosis, alcoholic encephalopathy, encephalopathy - alcoholic and wernicke's disease. Wernicke's encephalopathy is a brain disorder which loose some function of the brain caused by the thiamine deficiency. It also cause due to excess drinking of alcohol. It causes over the age of 50 years.

Causes of Wernicke's Encephalopathy

  • The main cause of wernicke's encephalopathy is thiamine deficiency which leads to normal functioning of the brain.
  • Excess alcohol abuse is common cause of Wernicke encephalopathy.
  • Continuous nausea and vomiting during pregnancy causes to the wernicke's encephalopathy.

Symptoms of Wernicke's Encephalopathy

  • Difficulty in speech.
  • Amnesia (loss of the ability to recall experiences)
  • Confabulation.
  • Double vision.
  • Hypotension.
  • Swallowing difficulties.
  • Reduce eye movement.
  • Attention deficit.
  • Ataxia.
  • Parenthesis.
  • Disorientation.
  • Cold skin.
  • Mental confusion.

Treatment of Wernicke's Encephalopathy

The diagnosis can be done by by treating patient with thiamine and watching the symptoms. Blood and urine test are also done to check the wernicke's encephalopathy disease. MRI scan can be help to diagnosis of wernicke's encephalopathy disease. The treatment help to prevent progression of disorder. There are some treatments are as follows

  • Treatment stated with intramuscular injection of thiamine which is followed by assessment of central nervous system and metabolic conditions.
  • Treatment consist of replacement of thiamine and providing proper nutrition and hydration.
  • Drug therapy is recommended to treat wernicke's encephalopathy.
  • The progression of the wernicke's encephalopathy disease can be stopped by taking by stopping consumption of the alcoholic substances and by taking healthy diet vitamin supplement.
  • Antidepressants help to increase levels of serotonin which is helpful in treatment of wernicke's encephalopathy disease.

Prevention of Wernicke's Encephalopathy

  • Eat nutritious food having proper vitamin.
  • Avoid excess alcohol abuse.

Prognosis of Wernicke's Encephalopathy

The symptoms can be cured by taking proper treatment. the symptoms may improve in days or week. The memory improvement is slow and sometime incomplete. Without treatment disease become serious. The treatment control the symptoms and progression of the disorder become slow or stopped. Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome require some care because the patient of this disease unable to perform simple task.
