Is Conversion Therapy Necessary for Mental Disorders?
TweetA controversial procedure
There are many people who feel that conversion therapy may be useful when it comes to controlling behaviors that can cause mental disorders like depression to occur. This is because conversion therapy works to help with adjusting a person’s behaviors. However, it is extremely controversial because it is used mostly for people who attempt to try and change people from being homosexual to being heterosexual. This is used by many people who like to believe that homosexuality is a mental disorder.
This procedure involves a plan where a person is exposed to negative stimuli while taking a look at different kinds of images. For example, a person with depression might be exposed to electric shocks or nauseating scents when dealing with images that involve depressing thoughts. This is often used as a means of trying to make it easier for a person to want to go to a different attitude.
What it is used for
The process of conversion therapy is often used with the intention of trying to work with depression, panic disorders and even fears that involve certain items that a person can be scared of. This is often used by helping to control attitudes to the point where a person may want to think about other ideas instead of dealing with problems involving some harsh ideas.
Does it work?
The big problem with conversion therapy is that there have not been many studies that suggest that conversion therapy could work. This is due to how many studies that work with conversion therapy are made with sexual orientation purposes in mind. This is also because sexual orientation is not considered to be something that relates to a mental disorder. This is a substantial point that makes this kind of treatment very risky and questionable for most people to discuss when finding ways for treating mental disorders like depression.
