How OCD can impact Children?
TweetObsessive compulsive disorder or OCD causes unpleasant and obsessive thoughts which are repeatable. They also contain compulsions in behaviors which becomes very difficult to handle and control. They are not like regular worries of people, where people just have some habits. They are the obsession which can consume most of people’s time and resources. It can interfere with daily schedule, and causes a lot of stress for the person. According t statistics on OCD, it can impact about one percent of children and adolescents. The origin of OCD is genetic and environmental factors.
Some examples of OCD are recurrent high sensitivity about germ contamination, excessive inclination towards tidiness, high concern that someone in family will become ill, etc. Repetitive behaviors like washing hands again and again, checking the locked doors again and again, etc are some of the examples of OCD. Following these compulsions make the person believe that these activities can help them prevent a something dangerous.
Other Conditions which can occur with OCD in Children
There are many conditions which can co-exist with OCD. Some of the examples are as follows:
- Depression
- Anxiety disorders - separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder
- Bipolar disorder,
- Autism
- Tourette syndrome
Other disorders which can occur with OCD are Trichotillomania Disorder, Excoriation Disorder, Hoarding Disorder, and other repetitive acts like nail biting, lip biting, etc. These co-existing conditions should be known by students and parents to better cope with them at school and at home. The manifestation of OCD can be different at home and at school. This makes it hard for teachers to recognize potential kids with OCD. It also causes conflict between parents and educators.
Typical symptoms of OCD in school kids
Some typical symptoms to watch for in School kids for OCD are as follows:
- Frequent need and request to use the bathroom which could be to wash hands.
- Constant reassurance seeking - Using "Are you sure?", "Tell me again.", etc.
- Stuck on tasks and take endless time in it. Not able to shift gears.
- Retracing.
- Obsessive erasing
- Distraction - Count till 4 before I write my exam will help me pass the exam.
- Very slow in exams and papers because of perfectionism
How Parents can help kids with OCD in School
Parent guidance sessions are very important and they can help them manage their kid's illness. The proper and effective parenting skill will help them to learn how to cope up with the illness, and cater to complex feelings.
A whole family therapy can also be considered if the situation is becoming critical. Group psychotherapy for kids can help them handle things better. They feel confident and safe if they see others with same of differing symptoms. School based counseling can help children cope up with the academic demands of the school. Remember, patience is the key towards handling OCD in kids at school and at home.
