How to Get Rid of Vitamin B1 deficiency

Vitamin B1 -Thiamine - For Calm Nerves

Vitamin B or thiamine, as it is more commonly referred to now, is one of the most important members of the B group of vitamins. Also known as aneurin, vitamin B is anti-beriberi and anti-neuritic. It is water soluble.

Vitamin B1 Benefits - Functions in the body

Thiamin diphosphate, often called thiamin pyrophosphate (TPP), is an essential cofactor, particularly in carbohydrate metabolism.

TPP is involved in the oxidative decarboxylation of acetyl CoA in mitochondria. In the Krebs cycle, TPP is the key enzyme for the decarboxylation of a-ketoglutarate to succinyl CoA. TPP is also the cofactor for transketolase, a key enzyme in the hexose monophosphate shunt.
Thiamin is found in many foodstuffs, including cereals, grains, beans, nuts, as well as pork and duck. It is often added to food (e.g. in cereals) in developed countries. The dietary requirement (see Table 5.7) depends on energy intake, more being required if the diet is high in carbohydrates.

Following absorption, thiamin is found in all body tissues, the majority being in the liver. Body stores are small and signs of deficiency quickly develop with inadequate intake.

There is no evidence that a high oral intake is dangerous, but ataxia has been reported after high parenteral therapy.

Vitamin B1 Deficiency Symptoms

Thiamin deficiency is seen:

  • as beriberi, where the only food consumed is polished rice
  • in chronic alcohol-dependent patients who are consuming virtually no food at all
  • rarely in starved patients (e.g. with carcinoma of the stomach), and in severe prolonged hyperemesis gravidarum, especially when treated by intravenous fluids alone.

Thiamin deficiency in patients with alcohol dependence

In the West such patients and those with severe acute illness receiving high carbohydrate infusions without vitamins are the only major groups to suffer from thiamin deficiency. Rarely they develop wet beriberi, which must be distinguished from alcoholic cardiomyopathy. More usually, however, thiamin deficiency presents with polyneuropathy or with the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

This syndrome, which consists of dementia, ataxia, varying ophthalmoplegia and nystagmus, presents acutely and should be suspected in all heavy drinkers. If treated promptly it is reversible; if left it becomes irreversible. It is a major cause of dementia in the USA.

Urgent treatment with thiamine 50-100 mg i.m. or i.v. is given for 3 days, often combined with other B-complex vitamins. Thiamine must always be given before any intravenous glucose infusion.

Average dose is 100mg/ day

Vitamins and depression What is the relationship between the Vitamins and Depression? There are a variety of vitamin deficiencies that can lead to depression symptoms. Correcting deficiencies, when present, often relieves depression

B-Vitamin Problems May Cause Depression in Some. The first clinical effects of insufficient vitamin B complex are mood changes, insomnia, changes in appetite, sugar carving and impaired drug metabolism. As a group, the B vitamins plays an important role both in alleviating depression and in relieving the anxiety and restlessness which often accompanies it.

See the chart to know effects of various vitamins and minerals deficiency in depression See the chart which explains in a nutshell the benifits, deficiency effects, source and daily dosage of the B Vitaimin family.

Vitamin B1 and its deficiency leading Depression Vitamin B1 is essential for nerve stimulation and for metabolism of carbohydrates to give brain energy as well as body energy. Deficiency symptoms include mood disorders, anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, night terror etc.

Vitamin B - B2 and its deficiency leading Depression Although this vitamin itself has not generally associate with emotional states, researchers find that diets restricted only in riboflavin produce adverse personality changes, including aggressive personality alterations.

Vitamin B3 Vitamin B deficiency has been associated with depression ans anxiety. It helps in irritability and other mental disturbances.

Vitamin B - B5 Vitamin B5 is active in the formation of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which can be involved in some depression. A deficiency can caues depression, fatigue and allergies.
